Review: Gunmetal Magic by Ilona Andrews

29 Aug

Their latest novel Gunmetal Magic shows why the husband and wife team (AKA Ilona Andrews) are tops in the urban fantasy genre. In this latest addition to their popular magic series brings former knight of the order of merciful aid Andrea Nash to the forefront. Andrea gets called in to investigate what seems to be a simple murder investigation of some pack members as they work on a reclamation project. Her investigation is soon complicated when she finds that her ex-boyfriend Raphael,  alpha male of clan bouda, is in charge of the project forcing the two of them to work together. More complication ensue when during the investigation when they learn that the murders were carried out by a cult to get some artifacts that will soon put Andrea and Raphael in the middle of a battle between two gods. To make matters even worse the god Anubis wants to take over Andrea’s body to use as his human form, they need to get a shield from an unkillable giant and Andrea must sort out her personal life including her feelings for Raphael and her status in the pack.

Their unique perspective with husband Gordon writing the male characters and wife Ilona writing the female characters along with a mixture of mythology, romance and action for excellent reading for both teens and adults. In Gunmetal Magic a good example of that mixture the interactions between Andrea and Raphael as they deal with the regular ups and downs of any relationship along with the added complexities of having to deal with the erratic behavior of an ancient deity and family.

Each one of the books has several twist and turns fights against deities and creatures taken from ancient mythologies and the conflicts between then Pack, clans of shape-shifters; the People, necromancers; the Order and several other magical, law enforcement and mercenary groups.
