Starting next week you can drink ‘Grumpy’ coffee will looking at ‘Grump’ cat

30 Jul

Watch-out Starbucks! Here comes Grumpy cat. Yes, our favorite cat with the permanent frown now has her own coffee beverage called Grumppuccino. It may sound like a joke but Tardar Sauce aka Grump cat will start selling her new coffee, that comes in three flavors, online beginning August 7, 2013.

“Grumpy Cat™ Grumppuccino™ aims is to provide the highest quality products possible, while bringing a little humor and happiness to all of our customers lives,” according to their Facebook page.

Ten months ago on September 20,2012 a then 5 month old cat named Tardar Sauce first appeared on the web and soon became a phenomenon. She has since been seen in captions all over the web, got her own twitter account, appeared on national television, has a movie in the works and had her pictured plastered on various types of merchandise.

“This started off as a picture of a cat, but rare is an image that evokes that much comedy,” Todd Garner, one of the producers of the Grumpy Cat film told Deadline. “You read all of the memes and the comments, and one is funnier than the next. We think we can build a big family comedy around this character.”

When she first appeared Tardar Sauce was dubbed Grumpy because of her facial expression that makes her look as though she is in a permanently bad mood. According to her human parents that look is due to her dwarfism and an under-bite. They say that Tardar Sauce is actually a very sweet and lovable cat.

Washington State now bans employers from asking for your social passwords

29 Jul

Back in May of 2012, Jeff brought you the story about the growing practice of employers asking potential employees to provide them with all of their social network passwords. At that time the practice was gaining national attention and by the end of April of 2012 two democratic representatives had introduced a bill to put a halt to this practice. The bill didn’t gain republican support and soon died. This prompted individual states to take up the fight.

“We’ve seen a trend nationwide with legislatures passing this kind of legislation,” said Dave Maass, a spokesman for the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a digital rights advocacy group. “It all started following media reports and complaints indicating that employers are using this as a tactic both for screening potential employees and for looking at current employees.”

Washington was one of the states that actually made some headway to put a stop to this act by passing Senate Bill 5211 with a 44-0 vote on April 27, 2013. The bill took effect yesterday and makes it illegal for employers to ask for passwords or demand to be added to their friend on the interviewee’s social networks. The Washington State law also goes beyond just the interview and says that a boss can’t demand any employee to give them their password or to “shoulder search”, the practice of watching as they scroll through their social network.

“I’m pleased that all sides were able to come together, work out their differences and agree on a bill that protects everyone involved,” said Democratic Sen. Steve Hobbs of Lake Stevens, who sponsored the Washington State bill. “Privacy shouldn’t be a thing of the past that we are forced to sacrifice every time technology moves forward.”

The new law does make an exception for employers to request content or access, without the actual password, if the employee is under an internal investigation. Their ix always concern whenever there is an exception made to a law that there is that potential to abuse that exception.

Steve Ballmer confirms there is a new Surface on the horizon

28 Jul

Earlier this month Jeff brought you the story about Redmond-based Microsoft dropping the price of their Surface RT tablet. When Jeff wrote the article he asked what the reason was for making such a move. A report by the Verge revealed that question was answered when Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer confirmed that the tablet is moving slow and there is a new Surface on the horizon.

“We built a few more devices than we could sell,” said Ballmer, referring to weak Surface RT sales. The Microsoft CEO went onto add that the recent 30% price reduction was required to improve sales.

The only things that we know about the new Surface tablet is that Mr. Ballmer said it wil have the “typical improvements”, it will have the new Windows 8.1 and that it might have the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor. Just Mr. Ballmer meant by typical is hard to say but it will probably include improvements to the cameras, longer battery life, more storage and higher resolution. If you where designing the new Surface what would you include?

They are also looking into getting an Instagram app for the Surface and all of their other Windows devices.

Hoopla gives you a new way to interact with your local library

27 Jul

Many of us that are regular customers of the public library system have at one time gone to check out a book, movie or some other form of media to only hear the words “sorry, but all the copies have been checked out”. Ohio-based Midwest Tape, who distributes all forms of media to libraries, has come up with an app to make sure you never hear those words again. The app is called Hoopla and is available on both iPhone and android-based devices.

Midwest Tape first came out with the app in February when the Seattle library system became one of the beta testers. Earlier this week they went from the beta stage to public test marketing the app in a dozen library systems that along with Seattle includes Charlotte Mecklenburg Library, Columbus Metropolitan Library, Edmonton Public Library, Hamilton Public Library, Harford County Public Library, Kenton County Public Library, Los Angeles Public Library, Orange County Library System (FL), Salt Lake County Library Services, Toledo-Lucas County Public Library, and Worthington Libraries.

“It’s been a successful experience for us; we haven’t had anything that quite works on this level,” said Kirk Blankenship, electronic resources librarian for the Seattle public library system.

The app is free to download and then you just simply set up an account by entering your library information. Once you do that you are ready to search through thousands of pieces of digital media that you can check out from your local library. The length of checkout time will vary for each library syatem but is usually 7 days. You don’t have to worry about returning any items that you check out since they will automatically return themselves at the end of the checkout period.

Midwest Tapes is expecting to have there app available in 100 library systems by the end of the year.

Fastfood chain Chipotle admits to fake hacking

25 Jul

There is an old saying “there is no such thing as bad publicity” that might still hold true but there are certain things that just shouldn’t be done. What the restaurant chain Chipotle admitted to Wednesday was one of those areas that can get you publicity today but can make you look bad. What did they do you might be asking. On Sunday the company made it look as though their twitter account had been hacked.

“We thought that people would pay attention, that it would cut through people’s attention and make them talk, and it did that,” Chris Arnold, a Chipotle representative, told Mashable in an interview. “It was definitely thought out: We didn’t want it to be harmful or hateful or controversial.”

Earlier this year the fast food chain Burger King’s twitter account was hacked by a group that calls themselves anonymous. The group had put McDonald’s logo on the account along with a message that the fast food chain had been sold. The hacking and subsequent stories brought plenty of attention to the burger chain. Then shortly after Burger King was hack there was a series of other big companies being hacked. When all of these accounts were being hacked it came out that one, MTV, was faked.

The PR (public relations) people at Chipotle probably recalled those stories when they were thinking up ways to bring publicity for their 20th anniversary. Just like MTV they weren’t going to wait for a hacking that might not happen. So, they just made it look as though someone had breached their account. Whether or not this has any negative condemnation is yet to be seen but they have managed to get people talking about them.

Facebook wants to know why your hiding items on your news feed

24 Jul

What you see is your news feed on Facebook is largely determined by your likes, friends, groups you joined and games you play. Now, the folks at Facebook want to be able to also adjust your news feed by what you don’t want to see. In a way they already get that information when you hide an item. The one problem is when you do hide that item they don’t want to see that particular post, the page that is associated with or the friend who sent it (if applicable). They plan to fix that problem by adding a question that will ask you if the item you re hiding is misleading, offensive, repetitive, or simply uninteresting?

“Over the next few months what you will see from us is more on why people like and don’t like certain things in their feed,” Facebook’s Product Manager for Ads Fidji Simo told ABC News. “We are planning to refine those so users can tell us exactly the reasons they are hiding that piece of content.”

There are probably plenty of people who will say it is just another way for Facebook to make money off us. To an extent those people would be right to think that way. The changes do help customize our news feed to make sure we only see what we want and also helps Facebook know what ads we are more likely to click. When you think about though most of the ads you already receive in your news feed.

“If a lot of people start reporting that something is offensive, it’s something we would probably not show to a lot more users,” Simo said. “If you tell us that something is uninteresting we would show you less about that, but we wouldn’t use that signal with other users.”
