Over the last year we have heard about quite a few hacking incidents. Some of these have been real, such as, Burger King, Jeep and the New York Times and others, such as, Mtv and Chipotle have been faked. None of these has had quite as bizarre result as what happened when the Russia’s RIA Novosti state news agency had their twitter account hacked. The indivual or group that hacked the account placed a fake report saying that former Russian President Mikhail Gorbachev was deceased. When the false story was brought to his attention Mr. Gorbachev soon set the record straight.

“I’m alive and well. I understand that some people are trying to use their sites to catch people’s attention or are fulfilling the orders of some authority or another,” the former Soviet president, 82, said in a statement on newspaper Novaya Gazeta’s website.

Mikhail Gorbachev first grab national attention in the mid 1980’s when he became the General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. Mr. Gorbachev became known as a reformer when started his Glasnost policy of transparency. Then in 1990 he was elected the first and only President of the USSR. Between his policy and his growing positive relationship with President Ronald Reagan were seen as two of the reasons for the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991.

In the decade plus that Mr. Gorbachev has been out of office he has experienced some health problems that have sent him to the hospital. Most recently he has had treatment for diabetes in June of this year. Other than that the 82-year-old has been in fairly good health and has kept a watch on the political situations in Russia where he has voice some displeasure with some of the current policies.
